Will Apple Use Google’s Gemini LLM To Power Search And Siri?

I would find it surprising if @Apple decided to use Gemini as an extension to its $20B-a-year deal to license search from Google, or, beyond that, to use Gemini to power #Siri.

That is for two reasons:

One, it has only been three weeks since Gemini showed us the female pope and female Asian Nazi soldiers. Show of hands, who wants this on their phone?

And two, there has been no communication out of Google since then that would give me confidence they are actually able to fix Gemini. @sundarpichai has said Google wanted an unbiased Gemini – but given the company’s current culture, it is unclear to me what they would consider to be “neutral” or “true”.

It would also mean Apple thinks they are so far behind Google, @OpenAI and @AnthropicAI in #AI that they need to buy time by licensing somebody else’s tech. This in spite of Apple’s publication of a paper on its #MM1 #LLM pre-training. (See https://arxiv.org/abs/2403.09611.)

Apple might also go with another partner. Reportedly, they have been in talks with OpenAI as well. Clearly, Anthropic’s #Claude chatbot would also be an option.

It is unclear if any deal could be wrapped up by the time Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference comes around in June (#WWDC2024), to be announced as part of the #iOS18 release.

Any deal would also face regulatory scrutiny.

Regarding the issue of bias, nobody talks about the elephant in the living room: namely, that a few hundred engineers at a handful of the most powerful companies in the world decide for 320 million U.S. users what is true and what is not.
