Marketing on @Amazon’s #Echos never went anywhere beyond some intrepid experiments, for example, by Campbell’s Kitchen (recipes) and Tide (stain removal tips).
The only thing that might have turned things around for marketers would have been radio-like ads – which to my knowledge, Amazon never tried.
Perhaps that was a bridge too far. Certainly, many users would have rebelled against what they would have seen as intrusive ads on such a personal device.
On the other hand, would that not have been worth a shot, given the alternative: losing $25B in 5 years?
But perhaps the planned subscription fee will be more acceptable. Maybe this will go the way of CTV: subscription-only models first, and when that doesn’t turn things around, add advertising to it.
I could see radio-like ads on Echos -audio retail media- being highly targeted and effective – and lucrative.
